When patch 7.41 arrived on May 29, 2026 — deployed in the middle of ESL One Birmingham — it did something few major patches have done: it removed an entire system. Facets, the hero-customization mechanic introduced in 7.36, are gone. Here is what replaced them and how the game changed.
Facets are removed
Facets let each hero choose between two variants at the start of a match. They added depth but also complexity, balance headaches and a lot of reading for new players. In 7.41, Valve removed them completely. Many heroes kept the best parts of their old facets folded into base abilities, while dozens of heroes received new or reworked innate abilities to preserve their identity.
Meepo is a good example. His new innate, Geomancy, grants stacking terrain bonuses — health regeneration near trees, movement speed on solid ground and an attack slow in water — shared across every Meepo. We cover what that means in practice in our complete Meepo guide.
Refresher Orb loses its best trick
Refresher Orb no longer refreshes item cooldowns. It now only resets ability cooldowns. The most visible consequence is the end of the "double Black King Bar" strategy, where a hero would pop BKB, refresh, and pop it again for an extended spell-immunity window. Refresher remains a strong item on heroes with big ultimates, but it no longer doubles up item actives.
Nine new items, three removed
The shop was reorganized to make room for nine new items, including Chasm Stone, Shawl, Wizard Hat and Consecrated Wraps. Three items were removed entirely: Cornucopia, Eternal Shroud and Whisper of the Dread. Expect the first weeks of any new item set to be noisy — players experiment, professional teams find the real winners, and the meta settles around a few builds.
Neutral items from minute zero
Two major neutral-item changes landed together:
- Tier 1 neutral items are available from the start of the game rather than from five minutes.
- Enchantments now depend on the hero's attributes instead of being random.
The first change speeds up the early game and rewards heroes who can make use of an early neutral item. The second makes neutral item choices more predictable and lets players plan builds around them. We explore both in Neutral Items After 7.41.
Map changes
- The Tormentor moved closer to the Lotus Pools on the low ground.
- Twin Gates and some river-side camps were adjusted.
- Wisdom Altars and Lotus Pools now have reversed cooldown behavior when enemies approach, creating new contest points.
The letter patches
7.41 was followed by a string of balance updates. 7.41e arrived alongside the Summer Scrub event (predictions, fantasy and new cosmetic rewards), and 7.41f landed on September 15 with nerfs to Lina, Necrophos and Treant Protector, item price changes (Octarine Core and Dragon Lance up, Heaven's Halberd down, Satanic lifesteal reduced from 30% to 25%) and buffs to Ursa, Anti-Mage and Batrider.
The bottom line
7.41 simplified the game in some places and deepened it in others. Removing Facets lowered the knowledge barrier; the neutral-item and innate changes gave players new decisions to make. For fans of multi-unit heroes like Meepo, the patch is a net positive: more predictable itemization and a new innate that rewards careful positioning.
